In my opinion ethnography as a research method is the most interesting. According to Trenholm (2008), “The researcher observes behavior in its natural setting….the researcher may actually “go undercover” as a participant…the researcher avoids imposing his or her own values and assumptions on the data…he or she allows conclusions to emerge from observation.
If I were researching deception between students communication with faculty a suitable research question would be; what excuse do college students use for turning in late assignments? I would use the survey research method to question faculty. It would be easier to question the faculty with a face-to-face interview and get generalized answers to see how far students will go to make excuses for late work. It would be interesting to research the student’s perspective through ethnography and see if the findings coincide.

Hi sjsueducatedfool,
ReplyDeleteIt has been great reading your posts each week! I wish you the best of luck during your finals and hope you have an awesome summer. I like what you said in your post this week about the research method of Ethnography. I have to agree with you, this is a very interesting method. As Sarah Trenholm argued, “The researcher observes behavior in its natural setting…the researcher may ‘go undercover’…avoids imposing his/her own values and assumptions on the data…Instead of testing an existing hypothesis, s/he allows conclusions to emerge from observations” [Trenholm 2008, pg. 374].
Additionally, I liked the question you would ask the students of communications, but more ideally, I would love to hear the outcomes of the survey given to the faculty about what they feel are the answers to why college students turn in late assignments. My thoughts are they are fearful of receiving a low grade, they are afraid of rejection, and sometimes they are just not conscious about the deadline.
ooh, i picked the same research method because it has the potential to be the most interesting with the potential for working with an extremely diverse population.i took a research methodology course and i find it extremely difficult to create a properly worded research question. i used the survey research method and it took the entire semester, and a lot of support from my instructor, to create a properly worded research question and survey. it's employed extensively in the social sciences. and i would agree with the profession insofar as the kinds of responses you would probably get from students asked this kind of question. well done!
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI also find ethnography very interesting. I think it is awesome to be able to apply a critical theory to everyday events in life. I once did an ethnography on a nursing home in Gilroy and through my research found that the clients social needs were not being met, although they received adequate general care such as changing their close or feeding them. Ethnography is a great way to inform the public of situations they are unaware exist. By doing this we are able to come up with not only a critical theory as to why the organization functions the way it does but it also encourages advocacy on the part of others then getting involved.
